To sum it up There isn't a general way how ArmA is played. I rather play with a couple of friends or a group (check the sidebar). I personally don't like public servers in ArmA 3, simply because I don't think that you get the most out of it. E.g: Wasteland, Altis Life (Rpg), Domination (Similar to Battlefields conquest).
To come back at the multiplayer There are public servers which offer you a wide selection of missions/game mode. It's nearly a year old now and is about the ArmA 3 Alpha, but most of it still applies to the current version of ArmA 3. First of all, I would recommend you to watch this. ArmA 3's (or any other multiplayer from the ArmA series) multiplayer is hard to describe.
